Spinal decompression for a herniated discMany people have disc issues and aren’t fully aware of it until the pain presents itself in a debilitating way. If you have been diagnosed with a bulging disc, it is highly recommended that you seek rehabilitation for it immediately so it doesn’t worsen and evolve into a herniation. Over time wear and tear and age take a toll on your spine and disc cushions. This wearing can cause the outer layer of the discs to bulge which can cause some pain and discomfort. A herniated disc often times evolves from a bulge because it went untreated.

The Difference Between a Bulging Disc and a Herniated Disc

The major difference is that a bulging disc is contained and mainly affects the outer layer of the disc while a herniated disc occurs from enduring so much pressure that the outer layer may crack and the inner nucleus protrudes out the disc. Usually, the herniated disc protrusion reaches further out than a bulge which can eventually cause nerve irritation. This makes it more painful and more involved when it comes to treating and managing associated pain. With nerve pain, depending on which nerves are affected, herniated disc pain can include pain experienced in a totally different area such as the heart, abdomen, or kidneys. Thus, it is easy to understand how serious and detrimental it can be if you are unaware or ignoring signs of disc issues.

Typical Herniated Disc Symptoms

Many people with herniated discs complain of back pain that spreads over the buttocks and travels down the leg(s). The pain is usually worse in people who are active but it gets better with resting at the onset. Also, certain movements like coughing, sneezing, sitting, driving and bending forward tend to cause more pain because of the pressure it applies on the affected nerves. Sometimes, numbness and tingling sensations come on which are an almost definite indication of nerve irritation and various treatments may be recommended.

Common Herniated Disc Treatments

Common treatments for new herniated discs or worsening conditions are rehabilitation and medication. The issue with pain medicine is that it is only a temporary fix for relieving the symptoms and depending on the type of medication, it can become addicting. Since medicine does not cure the issue or make any positive structural changes, other treatments like spinal decompression are the better option.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal decompression therapy works to decompress the disc space that has been compromised by the disc protrusion and alleviates the pressure on the disc. Over a few sessions, patients will begin to see a difference in pain levels and structural changes start to occur to restore proper function and mobility of the area. Spinal decompression therapy has a 91% success rate and advancements in technology have provided treating doctors and patients with great results. At Adkore, we recently introduced patients to the Hill DT decompression table and system and are looking forward to even better results than our previous system for patients suffering from chronic back and neck pain and herniated/bulging discs.

If you or someone you know is suffering from disc issues and chronic pain, call us to schedule a free decompression consultation to see if you are a candidate for spinal decompression therapy.
