Florida PIP insurance CoveragePersonal Injury Protection (PIP) is an insurance benefit under your auto policy. It extends coverage for those listed under the policy in the event that there are injuries sustained in an auto accident. PIP insurance can cover up to 80% of your medical expenses and may also cover income or wage loss, loss of services, and funeral expenses. If you suffer from any range of injuries in an auto accident, PIP insurance is a great option to ensure that you get the combination of treatments that you need in order to heal.

Using PIP Insurance in Florida:

Florida No Fault Law

There is a PIP insurance law that doesn’t apply to all states but voids fault in the event of an accident in Florida in particular. This means that regardless of fault in an accident, your personal auto insurance policy will serve as the primary payer and the at-fault party will serve as the secondary or tertiary payer to your regular health insurance. The PIP insurance law was also revised in 2012 to include a 14 day rule which allots 14 days for you to be evaluated by a primary doctor for emergency medical condition (EMC) in order to have access to the full amount of PIP insurance; usually $10k for most policies. If you are not evaluated within this timeframe for EMC, you are limited to about $2,500 max for medical expenses and auto accident care.

Auto Accident Care

There are a variety of injuries that can be sustained in an auto accident and your PIP insurance coverage is not limited to the type of injury unless it was clearly defined as pre-existing. Whiplash, neck and back pain, arm pain, shoulder pain, referred sharp pain throughout the body, tension, and herniated discs are of the most common injuries that are treated for rehabilitation. The goal is to first alleviate the symptoms, then move on to strengthening, stabilizing, restoring functionality, and preventative maintenance via a combination of therapies. Chiropractic, physical therapy, and medical massage are among the most highly recommended initial services for meeting the goal of full recovery. In more severe cases, spinal decompression may be recommended in lieu of the worst case scenarios, which include pain management procedures, medication, injections or surgery.
